Printing an artist book in a day, was today’s challenge. With the kids back to school I thought it would be a good shake-up. Actually the impetus was finding out that today, 17th April is Palestinian Prisoners Day, and there is a call for the day to be International Prisoners Day. I realise there’s plenty of ‘International’ days but as we’re an international community, I can’t see why everyday can’t be one of a sort.
There are far too many innocent captives. Men, women and children imprisoned under inhumane actions. Today is also the day when two men in the US state of Louisiana have been in solitary confinement for 40 years. I can hardly imagine it. Its like trying to see all the stars in the night sky. So as a way for me to remember and to raise awareness, I’ve produce an artist book that hopefully adequately reflects on confinement and freedom: “The Box”. Its mostly monotype drawings, and very little writing. The first mock-up had writing on every page, but the drawings were better so this is more of a picture book.
The Exeter-based risograph run by Nick Davies PrtScrPress, have assisted me so ably! They have been fab. The book has been printed on their risograph, which has a screen-print quality, but its quicker, and cheaper. So I could concentrate on the content and still get an edition of 50 by the end of today.
